Egg Sucking Leech
By Mike Nadeau
Hook - Mustad 9672 size 8
Egg - Hot Glue Stick - orange roe, salmon or red
Thread - Black 8/0 or 12/0
Tail - black marabou from Schlappen feather
Body - black Schlappen hackle
Form egg - Place hook in vise or on a clamp. Apply hot glue just ahead of eye of hook. Be sure glue is good and hot and move glue gun around hook to get round shape of egg. Put glue gun down and rotate and tilt vise or clamp until you have the desired shape. Place fly immediately in bowl of cold water (not chlorinated). Hold just under water for at least 2 seconds before dropping fly into bowl. Put several eggs on hooks at a time as it takes awhile to get the hang of it. When cooled the reject eggs can be taken off the hook easily with fingernails or a small blade.
Cut marabou fibers from base of Schlappen feather and tie in as a tail about the same length as the shaft of the hook. Wrap end of marabou tail clump up the hook to just below the egg as an underbody.
Trim Schlappen feather and tie in behind tail at bend of hook. Move thread up to just below the egg. Wrap hackle up the shank densely. It will be very long and webby and stick out. Wrap the feather a little thicker up by the egg. Add another piece if necessary. The hackle will look too long and thick but when wet it will look thinner and really moves well.
Tie off hackle, bind ends down well and whipfinish.
This fly is very big and fluffy in your fly box. To make it more manageable soak the fly in water, comb back with your fingers until the hackle lies down smoothly. Wrap in plastic wrap and leave sit for awhile then unwrap and dry.
Variation - When the Schlappen hackle has been wrapped about half way up the hook tie it off and tie 2 strands of red Krystal Flash on each side of the hook to just about the end of the tail. Tie the Schlappen on again and continue wrapping up to the egg.
